As Seen Through The Eyes Of Our Scouts

Pack 689 Wilderness Overnight

July 23 and 24, 2011 - Morgan Territory Regional Preserve

By Cole of Den 13

The Wilderness Campout was fun to the max!  It was fun because we got to discover Volvon Indian artifacts, see animals, view the beautiful sights of where we live around Mt. Diablo,  have so many scout adventurers there, and everybody learning so many new skills and using them at camp.

The artifacts that we discovered included arrowheads, shark teeth, animal bones, an old Indian map, and pheasant feathers.

The animals that we saw (or saw signs of) included wart hogs, snow-tailed deer, great horned owl, rattle snakes, bobcats, horses, coyote, a golden eagle, squirrel, cows, ducks, lizards, and grasshoppers.

The beautiful sights that we saw include amazing views of Mt. Diablo, constellations and satellites, footprints of animals in our area and beautiful trees and streams.

The skills that we learned included learning how to make rope, how to cast animal footprints from plaster, how to pack and put on a backpack,, how to filter dirty water to make it clean, how to cook food without a fire or electricity, how to hang food at night away from animals, and how to make a fishing rod from scratch.

My favorite memories will be camping in the open and watching the stars with my dad… and eating a grasshopper!

My fellow scouts who went on the adventure included Matthew “the leader”, Michael “the fisherman”, Nicholas “the cartographer”, Nolan “the naturalist”, James “the arrow hunter”, and Haden “the hiker”, Cody “eagle eyes” and myself.

We had a great trip! I hope all of you who missed it will do it next year because it was so fun and the best campout I’ve done in Cub Scouts.
